I wrote the first poem I was proud of in third grade. It had an unexpected break in rhyme and meter—and I was able to do that on purpose! That felt good.
Then I kept writing. I wrote skits to perform at my childhood summer camp, a screenplay starring my siblings for a homemade VHS movie, poems for hometown newspaper contests, songs when I thought I could play guitar in high school, and pieces for my college literary magazine. I was able to have many incredibly book-ish experiences as an adult in New York City, like taking part in writers workshops, reading at the NYC Poetry Festival, volunteering as a librarian at my children’s public school, and researching at the Center for Humanities at the main branch of the NYPL.
Robyn Wall is the author of the My Cool Family board book series and the picture book, I Worked Hard on That! A Memphis native, she was thrilled when her story, “The Haunted Jukebox,” was chosen to represent Tennessee in Macmillan’s The Haunted States of America.
A spider sets out to make the most perfect, awe-inspiring web only to have her artistic efforts destroyed again and again in this delightful picture book about the creative process and perseverance.
As a spider, Kiara has always made webs to catch food, but one day, she discovers a web so beautiful that she’s inspired to spin a masterpiece of her own.
So, Kiara starts creating, but even though she works hard on her webs, they are carelessly destroyed by others. How frustrating! It’s not until Kiara meets Orb, a spider who eats every web he weaves, that she gains a fresh perspective: the artistic process isn’t about the destination but the journey and the friends you make along the way.

Every state has an urban legend that evokes fear and curiosity in equal parts, and we’ve chronicled all of these logic-defying horrors here in the Haunted States of America anthology.
From the Jersey Devil to La Llorona, each story included introduces a new chill inducing, stomach churning monster, spectre, or poltergeist certain to keep you up at night. A broad ranging collection of authors, including seasoned veterans and some first timers making a fright-tastic debut, have all united to unearth the scariest lore from each state in the US, as well as D.C. and Puerto Rico. Make sure to strap in for this spooky cross country tour, but be extra careful not to let any of these terrors follow you home.
For centuries, scholars have debated the nature of the adventures of Sir Galahad whilst he was lost in the Wild Forest of legend before he took up his quest for the Grail. It was thought that no record of his deeds therein had survived. But the scholars were wrong.
Newly discovered tales of the errant knight and his further adventures have been brought to light at last. And behold but a smattering of their wondrous treasures: dragons, trolls, magic, mystery, heroic deeds, faithful companions, and doubtful choices that nearly lead to all manner of ruin.
“Creating something worthwhile takes time, effort, and patience... expressive Kiara is portrayed determinedly pursuing her passion; she’s also an exemplar of self-confident persistence. The colorful digital illustrations are by turns delicate and lively and incorporate examples of creative typesetting; those intricate webs are spectacular.”
“A spider comes to embrace the iterative nature of making in this tightly written story by Wall. Encountering an ‘extraordinary’ web, arachnid Kiara attempts her own, quickly finding that ‘heart-filling webs were not as simple as belly-filling ones.’ Various initial efforts leave the protagonist feeling ‘flat,’ ‘small,’ and ‘gray,’ until persistence allows her to push past negativity. But greatness remains elusive as a series of oblivious passersby wreak destructive havoc, resulting in the title’s exclamatory refrain. A partnership with weaver Orb seems ideal, until the latter’s appetite damages their collaboration. Epiphany arrives through discussion with a fellow creator who articulates how discoveries can be made through repeated effort. Leaning on dusty sages and candy reds, Kang’s digital artwork has paperlike textures, giving scenes an appealing dimensionality as this picture of creaturely creativity delivers winning insight about process.”
“Shiver your way across the United States of fear in this collection of paranormal stories by a diverse range of authors, including Dusti Bowling, Ellen Hopkins, and Padma Venkatraman.
It’s dark. Maybe it’s Halloween. Something isn’t right. Are those glowing lights? Strange sounds—screams, moans, whimpers, or more subtly ominous noises—float on the air. Your cellphone is useless. You’re impelled to do something you know you shouldn’t. Finally, the dramatic climax arrives, and you’re saved—or perhaps not. Variations on these elements with fearsome flavorings from every state, plus Puerto Rico and Washington, D.C., confirm that whatever the setting, humans can find scares. Camping is risky, whether you’re in Washington state or in Florida, Hawaii, New Jersey, or Wyoming. Readers will certainly want to avoid haunted Seven Bridges, Wisconsin, and after reading the Arizona entry, they’ll never look at a cactus the same way again. The entries offer frights for a variety of tastes: Many of the stories are good for a mild frisson; a few are truly creepy and chilling.”
